Almost a century after it was built, the church,
along with other areas of the school, underwent
considerable transformations following the new
artistic tastes and needs for expansion. These
changes were possible thanks to donations, but also
to profits from the haciendas owned by the Jesuits,
which were among the most productive of the time.
From 1750 to 1758, while father Pedro Reales was
rector, the altarpieces were changed. The present-day
façade and the tower were built in 1762. Also at
that time, between 1755 and 1756, the vaults of the
three main altarpieces were decorated with paint in
tempera by Miguel Cabrera. Among other subjects, the
glorification of San Ignacio de Loyola and San
Francisco Javier stand out, as well as the visions
of the Virgin of Guadalupe to
Juan Diego and the Holy Trinity to San Ignacio de
Loyola.
