Angangueo, Mx

Angangueo, which means in the Tarascan language, "entrance to the cave", is located 40 km from the Mexico City - Morelia expressway. At the Maravatio intersection, visitors traveling by car should go by way of the Aporo turn-off. Travelers to Angangueo may admire, in addition to the countryside and the beauty of the town itself, a variety of historical monuments that include: the churches of La Inmaculada Concepcion and San Simon

(the most important of the villages), a historical monument dedicated to the miners and the Casa Parker.

All of these is in the town centre.

The Casa Parker (tunel turístico) San Simon is worthwhile visiting. It was the home of Bill and Joyce Parker. Bill was an engineer working for the British mining company, from 1929 until their death in 1975. At the time we visited Casa Parker, the main guide during the week was an elderly man called Don Pancho. He worked for the Parkers from 1953 until their death and we can thank him for the Casa Parker being a museum now. The guided tour of Don Pancho is the most funny and fascinating mexican storytelling I have ever seen in my life.

Angangueo in the state of Michoacan is the base town to visit one of Mexico's natural wonders the "Monarch Butterflies". These beautiful creatures which visit the country every year cover the forests near Angangueo with their orange bodies. It is an experience of a life time. The best times to view these friendly creatures are between November and April. The entrance to the sanctuary is controlled by the

local communities and it is one of the best managed projects we have seen.

There is a visitor centre and a souvenir shop. Thousands of tourists visit this sanctuary during the year we all have a responsibility of taking care of the Monarchs so they come to visit us every year.
